Keith Gruchacz and Danny McCormick on the Yeti 100: 'It's something that you never fathom doing'
Put together 100 miles in the mountains with remnants of Hurricane Ian, and you’ve got yourself an endurance adventure.
Greensboro runners Keith Gruchacz and Danny McCormick competed in the Yeti 100 Mile Endurance Run on Sept. 29 in southwestern Virginia. Gruchacz finished second in 15 hours, eight minutes and 24 seconds, a remarkable pace of 9:05 per mile. McCormick battled a hamstring issue that arose during the race but still claimed 10th place in in 19 hours, 54 minutes and 41 seconds.
They sat down recently with me at Fleet Feet Sports in Greensboro for a conversation about their experiences. Click on the video to watch, or listen, as they discuss:
0:07: Why they wanted to run a race of this length and difficulty.
5:02: The adjustments that were required as the race wore on.
9:19: How they passed the time while running together.
12:07: The importance of crew members Kaitlynn Gruchacz, Keith's wife, and Sam Guo.
14:32: What they learned about themselves in completing the race.
20:33: What's next.
