22 For '22! Greensboro's Downtown Greenway

You can run or walk all the way around Greensboro's Downtown Greenway loop now. Work in 2022 will make enjoying that even easier and will bring the 4-mile project closer to completion.

Action Greensboro expects that construction on the Western Branch, from Spring Garden Street on the south end to just west of the Meeting Place at Tradition Cornerstone on Smith Street, could begin in March or April and be completed in 12 to 18 months.

That section, formerly a rail line totaling just more than three-quarters of a mile, has recently been cleared by Greensboro Parks and Recreation.

Some portions won't be the smoothest, but it's navigable. Running or walking along Cedar and Spring streets, parallel to the Western Branch, offers a paved alternative.

A segment connecting the Downtown Greenway to the south end of the Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway at Markland Drive remains in planning stages.

"The city is still working on the design for that section," project manager Dabney Sanders writes via email. "They are considering roadway changes and want to get a handle on that before fully designing that section."

Stay tuned for a date for the Run 4 the Greenway, which the city will manage beginning in 2022. And you can join other runners and walkers for weekly greenway outings at 6 p.m. Thursdays from LoFi Park, 500 N. Eugene St. Click here to learn more.
