Sarah Hampton receives Will Caviness Award from Omega Sports Race Series

The accolades flowed for Sarah Hampton, the president of the Greensboro Running Club.

"This individual always has a smile," Junction 311 Endurance Sports' Arlene Barbosa said in introducing the recipient of the Omega Sports Race Series' Will Caviness Award on Wednesday night. "Always found a way to bring community together. One word that sticks out to me is endurance: This individual has it. Challenges the beginner to the advanced, runner or walker."

The award was created in 2011, and it recognizes runners who help or inspire others in the community. Caviness, a husband to Jenny, father to Caroline and Jack and a Greensboro Fire Department captain, died after collapsing near the end of the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 9, 2011. He ran the race while raising money for the International Association of Fire Fighters' burn foundation.

"Supports and grows the community in so many ways, with a smile," Barbosa continued. "And engages in such a positive way that within a few minutes, you just feel like this person is your best friend."

The presentation was part of an awards evening in which the series' women's and men's champions, Kristen Bowles and Wil Zahorodny, were honored along with the second- and third-place finishers and the top threes in age groups.

"I don't deserve this," Hampton said. "You all keep me running. If it wasn't for everyone of you, I wouldn't be here."
