The final phase of work on the Downtown Greenway will be launched with a groundbreaking celebration on Saturday.

Work along the Western Branch, stretching from Spring Garden Street to Smith Street, is expected to start Monday.

The celebration is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Cairn's Course, public artwork created by Thomas Sayre. Cairn's Course is at 501 Guilford Ave., and parking will be available in a gravel lot.

Participants will be able to enjoy coffee, hot chocolate and s'mores around a fire. The first 100 guests will receive a branded campfire mug.

Cairn's Course opened in May 2021.

"Replete with the colors, textures and artifacts of the land," the site's sign reads, "these cairns call attention to and mark the renewal of the waterway."

Work on the Western Branch means that Downtown Greenway users will need to use the detour route for that segment. The Downtown Greenway is expected to be complete in summer 2025.
