22 For '22! What you're celebrating

Happy New Year, runners!

The 22 For '22! series ends with today's post. And for that, I'm turning it over to Running Shorts subscribers to share their thoughts about what they celebrate about running in the Triad.

Shawn Greer

"We have such an amazing running community in the Triad. I feel so fortunate to be a part of it. When my running journey began about 10 years ago, I couldn’t get enough of the local races or what a treat it was to meet so many new and friendly athletes.

"Over the last six months, I have been challenged with health issues. I honestly feel the life lessons I learned from running and sports prepared me mentally to deal with this challenge in a healthier way. From afar, seeing others post race results, I began looking forward to one day running long again. This has helped me through my health and life challenges this year.

"Cheers to 2022! Whether you’re a race leader, middle of the packer or sweeper, just know it is a gift to be active. We get to do this beautiful thing called running, and it is such a gift!"

Rick O'Reilly

"Celebrating 10 years of running, with amazing running friends.

"The older I get, the more I appreciate this special sport.

"I thank God that I still have the ability to lace them up, and cross the finish line!"

Joan Machanic

"Destination running routes and races are wonderful, but the Triad has so much to offer if you want to stay closer to home.

"I am grateful for the beautiful greenways, neighborhoods and trails. Races of varying types and distances can be found here. I am thankful for what RunnerDude Thad McLaurin has done for the Greensboro community with his Run the Boro and group runs. I participate in his weekly RUNegades speed work and signed up for his 1,000-mile challenge in 2022. I appreciate the stories and information Eddie provides in Running Shorts.

"Most of all, I celebrate all the local people I’ve met through running. Many friendships began with a run and have become so much more."

David Gile

"Absolutely love the supportive running and racing community we have in the Triad. Plus the beauty of mid-October and spring runs are hard to beat."

Charlotte Matheny

"As a runner who primarily runs on trails, I celebrate our over 40 miles of natural surface trails in Greensboro. I thank the City of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department for providing these trails; the volunteer groups who help to build and maintain them; and the runners, hikers, and bikers who use and respect them and do not throw down trash on the trails or at the trailhead. I rarely see any trash on our trails. I do see foxes, owls, beavers, deer, herons, snakes, chipmunks, and many kinds of mushrooms.

"I believe that interacting with the natural world on these trails is a way to maintain my mental health as well as my physical health, and I plan to continue running on them for as long as I am able."
